ICRA’s First Rating in India’s EV Segment is ‘Stable’

ICRA, the leading rating agency in India has assigned A- (Stable) rating to Greencell Marudhara Private Limited (GMPL), the electric vehicle bus-fleet operator for the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) in the state of Rajasthan. This rating is of special significance as it is the first such rating in the EV space in India. The rating factors GAMPL’s status as the successful concessionaire for procurement, operations, and maintenance of 48, 12-metre-long, fully built air-conditioned electric buses on intercity routes for the RSRTC, and its superior financial flexibility by virtue of being backed by Green Growth Equity Fund.

Potential 5000 New Jobs in Karnataka’s EV Sector

In its bid to make Karnataka the EV hub of India, the BS Yediyurappa-led State High Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC) has approved investments worth INR 22,419 crores in the clean energy space. These include two proposals by Elest Private limited worth INR 14,255 crores and 6,339 crores, and one proposal by Hyunet Private Limited worth INR 1,825 crores. These proposals in EVs and lithium-ion battery manufacturing have the potential to create nearly 5000 new jobs.

Omega Seiki and FITT to Collaborate on EV Technology and Research

Omega Seiki Mobility (part of the Anglian Omega Group) and FITT (an industry interface body established by IIT-Delhi) have signed an MoU to collaborate on innovations in alternate energy powered vehicles and other emerging technologies in the EV space. Omega Seiki which manufactures electric three-wheelers will make its vehicles, design and manufacturing facilities and lab available for prototyping, testing or sample manufacturing. This will eventually subsidise FITT and contribute to scientific and technical research on electric mobility.

Daimler to Launch India’s First Electric Truck

The German auto giant under the BharatBenz and Fuso brands is expected to unveil its plans for an electric truck for India in 2021. If these plans come to fruition, Daimler is likely to get a first-mover advantage in India as its competitors have been steadily working on capturing the e-bus market and have not shown much interest in the trucking segment yet. The company is expected to launch the Fuso eCanter – a light-duty fully electric truck – for the international market in 2021. The eCanter has a drive range of 100 km and can carry a payload of up to 3,200 kg.

India’s Road to the Future, the SUN Way

Bengaluru-based start-up, Sun Mobility has developed a battery subscription service to overcome worries about range anxiety and lack of public-charging infrastructure. The pay-as-you-go battery service system works similar to refuelling a petrol engine, where the driver stops at a swapping station and replaces his existing battery which is running low with a fresh one. Moreover, customers also have the option of using an app which connects with their EV battery and gives them real time information about its performance. SUN Mobility has connected the batteries as well as all the swap stations to the Cloud, allowing them to monitor battery performance telemetrics using data analytical solutions like Azure IoT Hub, Azure Data Factory, CosmosDB, Azure Databricks, among others.

Uber India’s Green Strides to Continue in 2021

Uber India plans to have 3000 EVs across all its platform (two, three and four-wheeler) by the end of 2021. The fleet operator aims to partner with OEMs, EV infrastructure firms (for charging and battery swapping), and financiers to make ‘green’ automobiles accessible and affordable. Uber has partnered with green technologies services start-ups like Lithium to deploy EVs across major cities in India, and with micro-mobility start-up Yulu, Mahindra, and Sun Mobility for battery swapping. The company had earlier rolled out 100 e-rickshaws in Delhi, followed by 500 in Greater Kolkata and will now expand this service to tier-II cities.

Govt Allows Two-wheeler Electric Taxis

Rising air pollution across the country has prompted the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to allow two-wheelers running on electricity or alternate fuels (bio-ethanol) to be used as taxis. EVs running on methanol or ethanol are also exempted from permit requirements. Following this announcement, state governments will facilitate the implementation.

Electric Ride-hailing Industry Could Save a LOT Of Emissions

A recent report by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) says that India’s ride-hailing industry will double its turnover to USD 52.5 billion by 2024, from USD 26 billion in 2020. According to the study, electrifying 100 percent of ride-hailing cars in India by 2030 could result in a 12 million ton reduction of CO2 emissions. Moreover, electrifying a ride-hailing vehicle will save four times more emissions than electrifying a private vehicle. However, early electrification of fleets will depend on the number of company or investor owned/leased cars based on which the operator will be able to create captive charging infrastructure, access to finance and optimise operations.
